Heute hier, morgen dort

I am pretty sure, that most people do not know, what major sports event will be hosted by Germany in the next weeks. People in Germany HAVE to know, because there is absolutely no way, that anyone could have missed the news: the soccer world cup is beginning next week. There is nothing else that people, the media, the trains.... talk about. I hate to admit it, but I am starting to really look forward to this event. Tonight is the second night in a row, that I am watching soccer TV shows. The one, that I am watching right at this moment, is about the best soccer chart hits of all time. Too funny. Especially once the soccer players start singing...

Mitte letzter Woche war ich bei einem Vortrag mit Lesung und Film von Peter Meier-Hüsing, der das Buch Der unmögliche Berg geschrieben hat. Sehr spannend und interessant hat er von der Geschichte der Erstbesteigung des Cerro Torre in Patagonien geschrieben. Es ist die Geschichte von Cesare Maestri, einem italienischen Bergsteiger, der 1959 als erster, gemeinsam mit Toni Egger, den Cerro Torre bestiegen haben will. Da Egger auf dem Rückweg durch eine Eislawine ums Leben kam und mit ihm auch die Kamera vernichtet wurde, gibt es bis heute keine echten Beweise für diese Erstbesteigung! Für mich war der Abend vor allem sehr schön, weil ich 2004 selbst in Patagonien war. Wir sind sogar den allerersten (einfachen) Abschnitt auf der Route zum Gletscher des Cerro Torre gewandert und hatten ihn für einen Tag lang immer im Blick. Wer weiss, vielleicht finden sich irgendwann mal noch Beweise für Maestri und Egger. Ich würde es ihnen wünschen!

This weekend, two of my best friends visited me in Cologne. For me, it was a very special visit, because I felt, that we really connected again. It is hard to really stay friends, once you live in different places and we certainly had our share of differences over the past 5 years. Sometimes, it is just necessary to spend an entire night together in one room and simply talk about everything and nothing. We had lots of fun and food and I am certain, that we will still be friends in the years to come!

Next week, I am starting my new job in a city close to Stuttgart. Pretty funny, as it means moving back after only three months in Cologne. I am sooo excited, because this new job is something I really want to do and a big opportunity for me. It also means, that I have a lot of packing and organizing to do during the next two weeks... The story of Sissi and Franzl has to wait, as I am enjoying the glorious feeling of having a JOB!

Just got back from an interesting and exciting weekend in Salzburg and the Salzkammergut with a very good friend. We had a workshop there from Friday afternoon until this morning and decided to extend the trip to 1 day in Salzburg. Very good decision. The weather was pretty bad most of the time, but I managed to get really sunburned during the three sunny hours we had yesterday. Salzburg is really neat. Just small enough and with many interesting sights. We went to a Mozart exibition (2006 is Mozart year) and the Festung (castle). We did not take the Sound of Music Tour, my friend didn't even know the movie (nobody in Europe does....). And the Sound of Music tours are only in english... On Friday, we drove out to the Wolfgangsee. Very pretty area, especially when the sun came out. Originally, we wanted to hike to St Wolfgang this afternoon, but when we saw the rain, we drove to Bad Ischl instead. Lots of exciting stuff happening in my life right now, but I can't go into any details yet. And I am off to Salzburg, Austria tomorrow. Should be an interesting weekend with a great friend. More details to come next week!

So many of you asked about the picture I shared for Mother's Day and so I thought I'd share the whole slide. We made a pretty nice Slideshow for my parents 25th wedding anniversary 3 years ago and this particular slide was all about us and her. The first picture shows me and my Mom on the day I was born in the hospital. I love the way we both look... The second one is my Mom with my younger brother. He is probably a couple of weeks old. And the third picture, obviously, shows my Mom with the newborn twins almost 18 years ago. I think it really is wonderful, that she gave birth to me and my siblings and with the picture on Mother's Day, I just wanted to thank her for it.

This was my absolute favorite tea in the US and I have been trying to find it here ever since I've been back. They carry it at a rather large coffeeshop and when the first stores of that chain opened here, I was so excited. However, they did not have it. I went into every store I saw and they never had it. Until today. Happy day for me. I just had a nice cup and it was so great!

Lange her, dass ich mal einige Buchtipps gegeben habe, aber es ist auch lange her, dass ich mal zwei Bücher in Folge gelesen habe, über die sich ein Bericht überhaupt lohnt.

In einem Rutsch durchgelesen habe ich diese Geschichte über eine Freundschaft in Afghanistan. Einem Afghanistan der 1970er Jahre, das für immer verschwunden ist. Die beiden Jungen Amir und Hassan wachsen zusammen auf - obwohl gesellschaftliche Schranken sie trennen. Amir lebt mit seinem Vater in einem großen Haus und genießt die bestmögliche Ausbildung; Hassan ist der Sohn eines Dieners, kann weder schreiben noch lesen. Beiden gemeinsam ist, dass sie keine Mutter mehr haben und einander nahe stehen wie Brüder. Bis zu dem Tag, an dem Amir die Freundschaft verrät. Viele Jahre später kehrt er aus dem amerikanischen Exil nach Afghansistan zurück, um diese Schuld zu tilgen und zu sich selbst zu finden. Vor meinem Auge erschien während der Lektüre das Kabul von Amir und Hassan. Die Sprache Hosseinis ist lebendig und seine Liebe für dieses Land wird so offensichtlich, dass man am Ende etwas traurig zurück bleibt. Traurig, weil es dieses Land nicht mehr gibt und traurig, weil mich die Geschichte trotz eines guten Endes sehr angerührt hat.

Der Schatten des Windes von Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Schon vor 2 Jahren in Argentinien bin ich immer wieder auf dieses Buch gestoßen, habe mir aber einfach nicht zugetraut, es auf Spanisch zu lesen. Gestern nacht hatte ich es nach drei Tagen nonstop-lesen endlich durch und es ist super. Anfangs dachte ich, es sei eine Fantasy Geschichte, was nicht so wirklich mein Ding ist, aber im Laufe der Zeit hat es sich zu einer Liebgeschichte mit Krimi-Elementen entwickelt. Sehr spannend. Die Handlung ist sehr komplex, aber es geht um den Jungen Daniel, der auf dem Friedhof der vergessenen Bücher in Barcelona ein Buch adoptiert. Seltsamerweise scheinen sich die Ereignisse in diesem Buch "Der Schatten des Windes" in seinem eigenen Leben wiederzuspiegeln. Er macht sich auf die Suche das Geheimnis um den Autor Julian Carax zu lösen und gerät dabei immer tiefer in den Strudel der Geschichte (oder seines eigenen Lebens?). Witzigerweise, haben mich die Figuren auch regelrecht verfolgt. Im Bus dachte ich an Penelope, beim Radfahren an Nuria und beim Einschlafen an den armen Vater. Definitiv ein Page-Turner.

Everybody has a song or a certain kind of music, that awakes memories. Good ones and bad ones. And if you are lucky, one of those songs can just turn a whole day around. As I stepped out of work today and walked to the bus stop, the song Roll Over by String Cheese Incident came up on my mp3 player and I started to smile and got a warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach. That song reminds me of my trip through the West of the United States and just makes me really happy. I can't even say why it is this song; we listened to a lot of great music during that trip... If you have never heard it, you can listen to a sample at the iTunes Music store or here. String Cheese Incident really makes wonderful music!

Es wurde Zeit für ein neues Design und dank der wundervoll talentierten Miss Zoot habe ich meinen Blog fürs Frühjahr angepasst! Vielleicht kommt jetzt auch wieder die Motivation etwas kreativere Posts zu veröffentlichen...
Wie findet ihr das Design? Viele Dinge funktionieren noch nicht 1a, aber das wird noch optimiert! Den Content hab ich ja mittlerweile :-)

What an interesting week I had. Painful and tasty. Fortunately, not at the same time!
On Wednesday, I had my first „real“ training at the Fitness Center I recently joined. I had a really good time and didn’t even think it was too hard. Boy, was I ever wrong! Never in my life have I ever had more pain in my abdominal muscles than yesterday. It still hurts, but it is not as sore anymore. That really shows, that I have no strength whatsoever!

The tasty part of my week happened last night. I went to a wonderful cooking class with wine tasting. The event took place at a really upscale kitchen studio in a beautiful neighborhood of Cologne. If I ever win the lottery, I will definitely buy a Kitchen here. The food was soo good and the chef showed us some really neat tricks.
I wasn’t so keen on the wine tasting part. The sommelier talked a bit too much and I hated to see so much good wine go to waste…

On Saturday, my sister and her friend ran a 10K race and did pretty good. She's been running for a while now and I think that's really great thing. I am not much of a runner, but I joined a fitness club last week and hope to go there 1-2 times a week!

Jetzt ist es schon Mai und ich hab schon fast Halbzeit in Köln. Mir gefällt es hier, allerdings werde ich wohl den Sommer bei meinen Eltern verbringen, um dann hoffentlich im Herbst einen Job zu finden. Ich habe gerade ein Problem gelöst, das ich ziemlich lange mit mir rumgeschleppt habe und anstatt richtig erleichert zu sein hab ich das Gefühl direkt vor dem nächsten Berg zu stehen: der Bewerbungsstress. Das ist ja an sich schon ein Full-Time Job und dann nebenher arbeiten... Am Samstag war ich mit einigen Mädels weg, mit denen ich studiert habe und die sind auch, bis auf eine, auf der Suche nach Arbeit. Es gibt einfach kein magisches Rezept eine passende Arbeitsstelle zu finden und vermutlich muss ich jetzt einfach mal weiterhin geduldig Bewerbungen verschicken!
